• My son's IEP meeting is due soon. It will include a 'transition" section. What does that mean and how can we prepare for the meeting?
    Transition is the process of promoting movement from school to post-school activities. In other words, what will your son be doing when he leaves school and how can you, he and the rest of the team help him get there? Post school activities include further education, jobs and job training, adult services, independent living and community participation. Transition must be included in the student's IEP at least by age 16 and be individualized to meet his needs. There must be an evaluation of his interests, abilities and the preparation opportunities available. The transition plan is built on a student's strengths. Before the meeting, talk with your son about what he sees as his goals for the future. What are his dreams? Where or in what setting does he want to live, work and be part of the community? Is he interested in certain vocations? What does he like about those jobs? Are there some he definitely doesn't want to do? What is he good at doing? What jobs has he done (babysitting, lawn mowing, walking the neighbor's dog)? What did he like and dislike about those jobs? What are his other strengths? Look at skills like he's always (or usually) on time; he gets along well with others; he stays on task if left to do a job on his own. Remember, think about his strengths in many areas, because those are skills he'll use in adult life. Discuss the skills that are needed for what he wants to do as an adult. IF he does not have any ideas about what he would like to do - look at his strengths and what he's already done. Looking at the school's assessment should help too. Remember, your son's active participation in his transition planning is vital. It is also required by law. After all, it's his future. His input, your input and the school's information should provide valuable teamwork to help plan for his future.
